Young Geographer of the Year 2004 The Geographical Young Geographer of the Year competition was launched in 1999 to promote the study of geography and to encourage students to carry out independent research alongside their usual studies. The aim is to provide students with an interesting, challenging and topical project. This year, we are asking them to consider ways in which the world’s seas and oceans could be used in the future. All students aged five to 18 from UK schools are eligible to enter. They should each submit a magazine article with the following title: Seventy per cent of the world’s surface is covered with water. How should we best use the seas and oceans?. They might like to include an interview, map or diagram or conduct a survey. The article must be interesting to read and easily understandable. It may be word processed or handwritten, as long as the latter is legible. Planning eLC spending Two half-day courses, funded by the DfES, aim to help schools with all aspects of eLC spending. Understand how to use your eLCs to raise standards and how to go about choosing the most appropriate titles to support teaching and learning. Teachers completing one of the courses will also be eligible to be DfES evaluators and Schoolzone consultants. Elements of the course include an introduction on how to use Curriculum Online to identify appropriate resources for use in schools. Guest speaker Russell Prue is an expert on how to help teachers get the most from this resource. Once you've found a range of titles, how do you know which will be best suited to your needs? A tutor tells how to identify the most useful features of educational resources and what to look for in order to support teaching and learning. Schools have found a range of ways to plan spending their eLCs. Find out how to develop a systematic approach to making whole school, and more specific, decisions so that schools are supported in their overall development.

Ticket to space Enrol in space school, take a virtual tour of the solar system, discover the possibilities of space travel, and pick the brains of an astro-expert. These are just some of the opportunities afforded by Ticket to Space, a six-week classroom resource which has been funded by NGfL Scotland, and developed in collaboration with the astronomers at the Glasgow Science Centre. There's both an offline and online resource, plus a space school competition. There will also be a teachers' forum to encourage the exchange of inspirational ideas. The package supports the teaching of the Scottish curriculum science strand 'Earth and space' at levels C-D in Environmental Studies - Society, Science and Technology: 5-14 National Guidelines. The resource, however, is open to classes throughout the UK and wherever you are, you're cordially invited to take advantage of what's on offer. The six-week event will run from 25 October - 3 December 2004. Online registration will open on 23 August 2004, but if you log in as a 'Guest' prior to this date you will get a flavour of Ticket to Space, including details of free pre-event workshops taking place in four Scottish local authorities, event activities, case studies and testimonials from schools who participated last year. Once registered your school will have access to teacher's notes, lesson overviews, learning outcomes and activities.

Hans Christian Andersen bicentenary Next year is the bicentenary of the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen. This will be celebrated worldwide through a wealth of activities to ensure that as many people as possible attain a greater and more varied familiarity with the writer. There is a great deal of interest in promoting this special year in Great Britain as well. The City Council of Edinburgh, for instance, already supports different ongoing projects. In relation to this celebration a Hans Christian Andersen-related teaching program is being developed by the Center for Children’s Literature in Copenhagen. Rather than being a completed course content the program is to be considered as a collection of ideas and inspiration for the teachers - in classes of literature, history and as well as in math and physics. The educational project, which appeals to the pupils in primary and secondary school, will feature in a number of languages and can be downloaded free of charge from the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 portal (address below). This site also informs you about every other HCA-related events and projects. The aim of the project is that school children in all grades are to experience the narrative and life of Hans Christian Andersen, to understand how other cultures perceive his work and life and to gather insight into the contemporary setting and literature of his time.
